Enterprise behemoths EMC and IBM are taking a close look at buying major infrastructure-as-a-service provider SoftLayer in a deal that could be worth more than $2 billion, Reuters reports.
Dallas-based SoftLayer closely competes with Amazon Web Services, Rackspace, Microsoft Azure, and others to help companies with their IaaS needs. In the cloud space, SoftLayer’s name doesn’t get thrown around like Amazon and Rackspace, but it is a popular choice for IaaS and has more than 25,000 small-to-huge customers, including AT&T, SendGrid, Citrix, and Path. It has 13 data centers in the U.S., Europe, and Asia and has raised $30 million in venture capital to date.
The fact that both EMC and IBM are showing interest in buying SoftLayer shows that the company has been successful in recruiting customers to use its public cloud over so many other choices.
IBM especially is interesting since it already offers its own cloud infrastructure products. Perhaps this means IBM wants SoftLayer’s data centers and tech to bolster its efforts.
Storage giant EMC, however, could be looking at SoftLayer to combine with the efforts of cloud services giant VMware, which it owns a majority stake of. EMC’s latest big move is a joint spin-off with VMware called The Pivotal Initiative, which focuses on “big data” and data processing services.

VentureBeat is creating an index of the top 'arms merchants' of the cloud. Take a look at our initial suggestions and complete the survey to help us build a definitive index. We’ll publish the official index later this month, and for those who fill out surveys, we’ll send you an expanded report free of charge.

AC Milan scored twice in the last 10 minutes to undo a spirited Celtic performance in their Group H Champions League opener in Italy.
The visitors came close with a Georgios Samaras shot and an Anthony Stokes free-kick, which struck the crossbar.
In a stroke of misfortune for Celtic, Cristian Zapata's strike was deflected into his own net by Emilio Izaguirre.
And Muntari knocked in a loose ball after Mario Balotelli's curling free-kick was palmed by Fraser Forster.
The result is Celtic's 20th loss in 22 away group outings but those sorry figures do not reflect what was an impressive display from Neil Lennon's men, which will provide hope for coming games against Barcelona and Ajax once the pain has subsided.
Led by the industry and composure of captain Scott Brown, Celtic matched the seven-time European Cup winners for most of the game and had chances to take the lead at the San Siro.
From an indirect free-kick, Charlie Mulgrew's shot from 10 yards out was charged down by a cluster of defenders racing from the goal-line.
Samaras hammered a shot narrowly wide, Brown was denied a clear run of goal by a brilliant Nigel de Jong tackle and Stokes found the junction of post and crossbar with a lovely free-kick just a few minutes before the deadlock was broken.
Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk were as imposing as the snow-capped mountains that border the city, doing a wonderful job of protecting Forster, although the goalkeeper made his own contribution to an excellent display from Lennon's side.
He was fortunate that a ferocious 18-yard volley from Balotelli flew straight at him in the opening minutes as the hosts started strongly.
And Forster needed to look sharp to push away a glancing header from Alessandro Matri before Antonio Nocerino fizzed a shot over.
But Balotelli and Matri did not link up well in attack for AC Milan, with the former Manchester City forward a peripheral figure for long spells.
Indeed, Balotelli spent most of the first 45 minutes shrugging his shoulders on the left flank, apparently unhappy that a couple of robust challenges on him had not yielded fouls.
The Italy striker did, however, come very close to opening the scoring in the final moments of the first half when his deflected strike looked destined for the bottom corner before Forster produced a marvellous diving stop.
Samaras scored in all three of Celtic's away games in last year's successful group campaign and the Greek forward thought he had done it again after the interval when his slaloming run culminated with a fizzing shot that swerved inches wide.
He later powered into the six-yard box to connect with a header but his effort was blocked by a defender.
There was a huge let-off for Celtic when Muntari somehow missed with a close-range header.
And the visitors nearly took advantage when a slick counter-attack involving Stokes and Kris Commons released Brown into the penalty box, only for De Jong to make a terrific sliding challenge.
Celtic, who earned nine corners, came closer still when Stokes' free-kick clipped the Milan crossbar.
The Italians laboured for periods, with the home support voicing their frustration, but the stadium exploded in joyous relief as the hearts of travelling fans sunk when Zapata's raking strike clipped Izaguirre and left Forster wrong-footed.
Much was made of the home side's long injury list but there were still several big names on display in red and black and Balotelli made amends for his disappointing display with a curling free-kick that had Forster palming the ball out, but Muntari was on hand to convert from close range.

Lionel Messi scored a superb Champions League hat-trick as Barcelona ran Ajax ragged in their Group H opener at the Nou Camp.
The Argentinian striker was at his effortless best, despatching a fine first-half free-kick and then producing two clinical finishes either side of Gerard Pique's header.
Ajax were passengers in the second period and were denied even a consolation when Victor Valdes saved Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's penalty.

Aaron Ramsey continued his fine form to help earn Arsenal a record 10th successive away win as they strode past Marseille in the Champions League.
Ramsey's goal six minutes from time settled the contest when he collected Kieran Gibbs' ball to fire in from 16 yards for his sixth in seven games.
Theo Walcott's volley midway through the second half gained control of the game after some early scares.
A stoppage-time penalty by Marseille's Jordan Ayew made little difference.
Ramsey brought down Andre Ayew for the spot-kick, with the Marseille forward appearing to make the most of any contact.

A new patent suggests that Apple
may add text-to-speech functionality to its Notes app, specifically for communicating in a different language.
The feature will translate text into a desired language, and then convert that text to speech that can then be read aloud. Any integration with Siri is unclear.
The translation feature will be listed as another option from the pop up menu — along with cut, copy and paste — that currently shows up on the iPhone upon selecting a particular phrase.
Google Translate for the iPhone currently offers a similar functionality. The app reads an English word or phrase in a different language of your choice.
A Notes integration could potentially prove much more useful, with key phrases like "How do I get to the train station?" available in different languages at the ready.
Would you use a translate feature within Notes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

A VA database administrator mistakenly deleted the materials, which had been uploaded to the VA’s home loan programs online application since mid-March, according to VA spokeswoman Jo Schuda. The incident happened May 24 at the Cleveland VA Regional Office, which according to the office’s website serves 1.1 million Ohio veterans and their dependents. The online application is used by VA staff and the department’s loan partners, including lenders and appraisers.
Among the hundreds of thousands of deleted files were active loan files, appraisal documents and grant documents for veterans and service members who qualify for the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant, Schuda said. This program helps disabled vets and service members obtain homes that are specially equipped or renovations that accommodate their disabilities, VA’s website states.
Schuda could not say how many veterans and service members are affected, where they live or whether they have or will be contacted. It also isn’t clear to what extent the incident will add delays to VA’s grants and loan process.
Schuda said no personal information was compromised.
Schuda said VA staff are being retrained to prevent the error from occurring again. In addition, the department has hired a contractor to “ensure disaster recovery is effective in the future,” she added, but declined to name the contractor.
Catherine Gromek, spokeswoman for the VA inspector general, said in a statement the office does not have enough information to decide if a review of the incident is warranted.
Gerald Manar, deputy director of national veterans service at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said the loss of the data introduces the prospect of huge delays for veterans who filed applications.
In recent months, VA has drawn fire for its growing benefits claim backlog, which now totals about 860,000, including almost 570,000 more than 125 days old. The agency has instituted 20 hours of overtime a month for its 10,000 claims processing employees through the end of fiscal 2013. VA Secretary Eric Shinseki has vowed to eliminate the backlog by 2015 and replace the paper process with a digital one.

There are few better places to watch the defeat of one of the major English clubs than Goodison Park.
The old stadium seemingly magnifies the noise tenfold, the roar of the crowd growing ever more frantic as Evertonians anticipate a famous victory.
Saturday was just such an evening. Everton, with Ross Barkley outstanding and Leon Osman, Gareth Barry and Steven Naismith to the fore, were excellent. Chelsea, despite an array of chances, looked strangely vulnerable amid the cacophony of noise.
It will be a while before we can question Chelsea’s transition under Jose Mourinho but it is fair to say seven points from four games and a UEFA Super Cup defeat, albeit on penalties, was not the start he would have anticipated.
This does not look like Mourinho’s Chelsea at present. They lack the authority of old, with neither overwhelming strength nor ruthlessness under pressure. They look a team with an identity crisis, caught between the manager’s requirements and the owner’s vision.
‘Artistic football without goals is not good,’ said Mourinho as he listed the litany of chances his team missed, debutant Samuel Eto’o and summer signing Andre Schurrle bearing the brunt of his criticism.
He offered no easy excuses for the slackness in defence and finishing. ‘I don’t think it’s a question of sharpness,’ he said before identifying the lazy ball from Schurrle on 28 minutes and the delay from Eto’o that allowed Barry back to block in front of an open goal after Tim Howard’s mix-up with Sylvain Distin.
‘Perhaps it is not having the killer instinct. If they don’t have it they have to get it but I think they have it.
‘My team are always my team. Winning, losing, playing badly, they are always my responsibility. Later they will have more the identity of the manager and it’s easier to do that after five months than after four weeks.’

FRANKFURT -- Opel/Vauxhall has started work on a new flagship model that will launch at the end of 2016 or early 2017, company sources told Automotive News Europe. The car may come to market with alternative powertrains such as a fuel cell system to help boost Opel's green image.
According to internal plans, Opel's management board sees an annual sales potential of about 20,000 units. The new model will be positioned above the company's Insignia midsized car.
Klaus Franz, Opel deputy chairman and the company's top labor official, said the flagship should be a "technological spearhead" for the brand with hybrid and fuel-cell propulsion systems and lots of other state-of-the-art technologies.
"Already with the our Ampera electric vehicle, we have shown what we are able to do and enjoy an advantage of two to three years compared to the competition," Franz told ANE.
Franz said unions will press for the car to be built in Germany. "The workers representatives will support this project to the fullest. A flagship like this can only be built on the Epsilon 2 architecture with long wheelbase. We will do everything to build this car at our headquarters in Ruesselsheim, rather than Mexico or elsewhere," he said.
Franz sees annual sales of 20,000 for the model as realistic for Opel/Vauxhall in and outside Europe.
He said it is unlikely to be possible to launch the flagship, which is internally called the TOL (top-of-the-line), before 2016 because of other priorities, such as introducing a new minicar codenamed Junior, as well as new Astra-based convertible and coupe models and a small SUV. "The TOL is a luxury," he said.
In May, Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke said the company was mulling a new flagship model that would improve the brand's image. He told a Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper that the car would be a crossover between SUV and station wagon, with an attractive design, high functionality and premium features.
An Opel spokesman declined to comment to ANE on the company's future product plans.

Everyone has an occasional "bad hair day," but for those unfortunate people stricken with a condition known as "Smelly Hair Syndrome," a bad hair day can mean relationship problems, taunts from coworkers and even expulsion from school. Consider these examples:
"I wash my hair and by the middle of the day it has a sweaty, muggy smell ... I'm a sophomore in college, never had a boyfriend, never even kissed a guy, all because of this smelly demon that I have had to cope with since eighth grade." -- Corrin, The Beauty Brains Forum
"I go to work everyday because I have no choice, but my co-workers are very cruel to me because of the bad odor they smell coming from my head. They don't know how hard I try to take care of this problem." -- Sierra, The Beauty Brains Forum
"An 8-year-old girl said she was removed from her classroom at a Seattle school because of the way her hair smelled. She has now missed a full week at Thurgood Marshall Elementary." -- KIRO TV report
What's going on here? What is "Smelly Hair Syndrome" and can it really be so socially stigmatizing? After receiving hundreds of questions about this issue we were intrigued to find out more.
The symptoms of smelly hair
We discovered that Smelly Hair Syndrome manifests in one striking symptom: a horrific odor that emanates from the hair and scalp. According to the people who have commented on our blog, the olfactory character of the smell varies from person to person. Some describe it as "... stinks like a diaper." Others have compared the smell to "sour milk, wet dog, moldy hay, potatoes, an old shoe or dirty socks, a jacket that's never been to the dry cleaner, and an oily smell mixed with vomit." The most unusual description we've heard was "... sort of a cross between Dorito's Bold BBQ chips and cinnamon (and not a sweet smell, actually kinda foul) and maybe a hint of cheese." And, finally, one unfortunate reader told us that "my hair is so smelly that sometimes flies buzz around my head."
These secondary symptoms made us wonder if a potential cause of Smelly Hair Syndrome could be seborrheic dermatitis (seb-o-REE-ik der-muh-TI-tis), because it causes an increase in oil production and flaky scalp residue. However, according to Mayo Clinic's webpage, scalp odors like those described above are not typically associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Furthermore, our readers tell us that in many cases their doctors have not been able to identify a definitive cause. Many said that their doctors didn't take the problem seriously: "I even went to the dermatologist. Twice! He never heard of such a thing and seemed to not even believe me which made me very angry! Why don't these doctors have a clue?!" "I went to see a dermatologist. Which was of no help! I got prescriptions and so forth but nothing worked."
From the comments we've received, Smelly Hair Syndrome appears to be a real problem that is unresolved for many people. Based on our readers' input, the medical community has not yet provided a satisfactory solution. According to our understanding of chemistry and hair and scalp biology, shampooing with sulfur and Triclosan-based soaps may offer some relief. We hope that more definitive treatment options are identified by the medical and cosmetic science communities.

The odor is so strong that other people can easily notice it ("I know my co-workers could smell it and I was so embarrassed.") Spouses and significant others have also told us that the odor is problematic because it can transfer to towels and pillow cases. For some people the smell is noticeable right after showering; for others it starts a few days after they've washed their hair. We received several comments from people who shower before sleep and wake up with a smelly scalp. Interestingly, one person pointed out that their hair starts out with one scent right after washing and changes to a different odor about 12 hours later. In addition to the malodor, some people experience increase in oily hair and scalp. One woman notices a "thick, oily, flour-like substance on my scalp."
Causes and cures
Without a satisfactory medical explanation, people are left to figure out their own cures. Our readers have tried just about everything you can think of, including medicated shampoos like Nizoral, Selsun Blue, Neutrogena T/Gel, Head & Shoulders and Denorex. They've used tea tree-based products (like Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat conditioner) because of the alleged anti-fungal properties of tea tree oil (unfortunately, most tea tree oil shampoos contain very little of the actual oil). In desperation, some people have even tried medicated pet shampoos.
Others have forsaken commercial products for home remedies like lemon juice, baking soda, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, aloe vera, neem oil, chlorophyll supplements and a mixture of honey and cinnamon. One person even uses hand sanitizer on her scalp two or three times a day. Then there's the most elaborate of all the treatments we've heard of: "I go to this salon where they rub a liquid into your hair, wrap it in plastic wrap and steam it. This is followed with something they call 'frequency treatment' -- it is a glass rod attached to a machine and they deliver something like an electrical impulse."
What really works to treat Smelly Hair Syndrome? Of all the solutions proposed by our readers, two seemed to provide reasonably consistent results: Dial antibacterial liquid body wash and sulfur-containing soaps. These treatments make sense from a scientific point of view, if the cause is bacterial or fungal. An antibacterial agent (like the Triclosan used in the Dial bodywash) could prevent bacteria from growing, while sulfur could reduce scalp oiliness thereby eliminating the "food" that bacteria or fungi need to grow. For those who haven't had success with other treatments, these two options maybe worth a try. Of course, you should consult with a dermatologist to ensure your symptoms aren't caused by psoriasis or some other condition.
Conclusion
If you or someone you know suffers from Smelly Hair Syndrome, leave a comment and share your experiences with the rest of our readers. If you are a health care professional with experience with this problem, please leave a comment and share your advice.

Parents with dogs may love their children but when it comes to sharing, pets win — that is if the sharing is of bacteria.
A team led by Associate Professor Rob Knight, a scientist in the ongoing National Institutes of Health Human Microbiome Project, and doctoral student Se Jin Song recently released a study of the types and transfer modes of microbes from the guts, tongues, foreheads and palms of members of 60 American families.
This research was supported by ELIFE, a joint initiative of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust Fund. The team members are studying bacterial communities to better understand how they can prevent and treat disease.
Knight and his team included 159 people and 36 dogs in the study. Seventeen of the families had children at home, ranging in age from 6 months to 18 years old. 17 of the family had neither dogs nor kids. Each family consisted of at least one couple ranging between 26 and 87. All the children were biologically related to their parents. The team swabbed different parts of the human and dog bodies to get microbial samples. Human samples came from the tongue, forehead, palms and fecal samples. Dogs were sampled from the same areas except that the team swabbed the fur instead of skins and paws instead of hands.
The team was surprised to find such a strong microbial link between the humans and their dogs. In effect, the team noted that there seems to be a stronger microbial link between parents and dogs than humans and children.
Knight has been quoted as saying that one of the biggest surprises is the fact that they could detect such a strong connection between the humans and the pets. Knight says that the microbial connection between humans and pets is much stronger than that between parents and children.

As the nation memorializes one of the worst events in our recent history, we take time to honor some canine hero who helped survivors of the tragedy.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Genelle Guzman-McMillan was working in her office in one of the World Trade Center Buildings. She heard the terrible noise outside, and as she fled down the stairs, the building crumbled around her.
It would be 27 hours before she was pulled from the wreckage – the final living person to have been saved. It wasn’t a firefighter or police officer that found her, but a dog.
It’s so awesome that the dogs could have this kind of sense, to find people buried under the rubble,” Guzman-McMillan told Animal Planet for their documentary Hero Dogs of 9/11. “I felt total renewed life in me. … That was the most joyful moment.”
Her story was one of many that inspired documentary producer Tanya Kelen to showcase some of the canine heroes of that day. Also honored were the first responders, trainers and veterinarians who helped make the dogs’ dedication possible. The program aired yesterday on Animal Planet, but unfortunately, there are no additional airings for the next two weeks (according to TV Guide).
We found a number of people who were too shaken up to share their stories,” Kelen said of her meetings with 9/11 survivors. “But Genelle said she had a mission to keep telling her story because she’d been saved.”

Guzman-McMillan was one in a team of about fifteen Port Authority workers all trying to evacuate the building at once.
I felt the walls cave in,” she said. “It was dark and everything was rumbling.”
Guzman-McMillan was trapped by steel and cement, unable to move until a dog alerted rescuers to her location. She was the only one in her group to survive. She was told by doctors that she would never be able to walk again. She defied them by becoming able to run again. She has since gotten married and had two daughters.
Over 300 specially trained search and rescue dogs scoured the debris in the days following the WTC collapse. They searched for survivors, and when there were no more to be found, they moved on to find remains. They also located jewelry and other personal items of victims that could be returned to mourning loved ones. Others served as therapy dogs to help victims and loved ones cope with the traumas they endured.
Another saved on 9/11 was Michael Hingson, whose seeing-eye dog Roselle led the WTC employee out of the building. Though people aren’t supposed to pet guide dogs while they’re on duty, a firefighter passing by Hingson stopped to pet and cuddle Roselle.
