On 6th September, USAID’s Basic Education Program organized its second “Children’s Book Fair” 2013, as part of International Literacy Day celebrations. The fair is an opportunity for publishers from Kosovo, Albanian and Macedonia to showcase books for children. USAID/Kosovo Director Maureen A. Shauket and Ramë Buja, Minister, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) visited the fair.
The Program displayed its newly-developed graded reading books and ‘mini-books’ for younger students, and an online version of these books was demonstrated. In addition to displays of books, charts and other reading materials, the Program presented a web-site (www.libroteka.org) where teachers can upload student’s books and students can read other student’s books.
“The dream of Martin Luther King is being fulfilled since we are all working together in this Fair’s activities” said Elsa Bilalli from Pristina.
“Bookmaking was the most interesting activity of the Book Fair, since I was able to create my own book and express myself through writing and drawing” said Ida Krasniqi from Prishtina.
As part of the “Children’s Book Fair”, the Program arranged a model “Literacy Center” where students practiced reading, writing and other communication skills. Such a classroom-based center will support students to improve their reading skills and it served as a model that primary schools can replicate in their classrooms and libraries.
There was a display of books made by students and students who visited the fair could make their own books from paper and recycled materials in a bookbinding corner. During the visit of the Minister and Mission Director, the Program awarded prizes for the best books created by students”. It also announced awards for the “Best School Library” following a competition.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the famous Martin Luther King Jr. speech “I have a dream”, the program organized related activities with students during the fair at the “Literacy Center”.
The “Children’s Book Fair” attracted wide media attention both before and on the day. Three TV shows from different stations, followed the fair during the day and interviewed students. A children’s radio show, “Kolovajzat e se Dieles” also broadcast from the fair.
